Hand Grips

Q: What is the difference between chalk grips and chalk-free grips?

Chalk grips prioritize protection and consistency on rough bars or bars loaded with chalk. Chalk-free grips seek direct grip, performing better on clean bars. The choice depends more on the environment than on the level.

Q: Which grip thickness is better?

There is no universal “better” thickness. 2.9 mm offers more protection and support for high volume. 2.1 mm provides more feel and control. The choice depends on your experience, the type of bar, and training volume.

Q: Can I use chalk-free grips on any bar?

Chalk-free grips perform best on clean bars. If the bar is heavily loaded with chalk, they may lose adhesion. In that case, it is advisable to clean the bar or use a more tolerant model.

Q: Are wristbands mandatory with grips?

They are not mandatory, but they are recommended. Grips with wristbands improve stability, reduce velcro rubbing, and help manage sweat, especially in long workouts.

Frequently asked questions

Which CrossFit grips are best for beginners?

For beginners, the ideal grip is one that combines protection and stable grip to allow accumulation of repetitions without the hand becoming the limiting factor. Chalk-free models and those with greater thickness help progress sooner in pull-ups, toes-to-bar, and bar muscle-ups on clean bars.

What is the difference between chalk grips and chalk-free grips?

Chalk grips prioritize **protection and consistency** on rough bars or bars loaded with chalk. Chalk-free grips seek **direct grip**, performing better on clean bars. The choice depends more on the environment than on the level.

Are CrossFit grips suitable for rings?

Yes, but not all work the same. For rings, many athletes prefer more **tactile and less “sticky”** models that allow quick release during transitions and swings. Excess grip can hinder certain movements.

Which grip thickness is better?

There is no universal “better” thickness. **2.9 mm** offers more protection and support for high volume. **2.1 mm** provides more feel and control. The choice depends on your experience, the type of bar, and training volume.

How do I know which size of CrossFit grips to choose?

With fingerless grips, what matters is palm coverage, not the “apparent” size of the hand. VELITES practical rule: if you are between two sizes, **choose the larger one**. A short size creates hot spots and rotations.

Are women’s CrossFit grips different?

The design is unisex, but many women choose larger sizes than expected to ensure good coverage. Having a small hand does not automatically mean using a small size; the real friction zone is what matters.

Can I use chalk-free grips on any bar?

Chalk-free grips perform best on **clean bars**. If the bar is heavily loaded with chalk, they may lose adhesion. In that case, it is advisable to clean the bar or use a more tolerant model.

Are wristbands mandatory with grips?

They are not mandatory, but they are recommended. **Grips with wristbands** improve stability, reduce velcro rubbing, and help manage sweat, especially in long workouts.

Can grips be used for pullovers?

It is not recommended to use high-grip chalk-free grips for pullovers. Excess friction can prevent natural hand rotation and increase risk. For that movement, it is better without grips or with protection-only models.

How often should I replace my CrossFit grips?

It depends on volume and care. If the material loses stability, persistent folds appear, or protection decreases, it is time to replace them. Proper washing and drying significantly extend their lifespan.
