HYROX Doubles Run: How to Prepare It, Who Should Lead, and How to Avoid Penalties

HYROX Doubles race strategy and partner training

The running in HYROX as a pair is not split. You both run every kilometer together. And that changes everything. It doesn't matter who is stronger. If you don't know how to run together, you'll pay the price in the second part of the event.

In this HYROX doubles running guide you'll learn:

  • How to run as a pair without wearing yourselves out
  • Who should lead
  • What pace to use according to your level
  • Which mistakes destroy most teams

Let's start with the video and then we'll explain some key points in more detail and how you can get access to the full course (Individual and doubles) at no cost, gifts, discounts and much more.

Let's go step by step. First the video to prepare the HYROX doubles run:

Remember that you also have a post with a detailed explanation of the technique whether you compete in doubles or individual, with a video that is very, very... you decide:

Who leads and how to run together

In HYROX, the only moment when you work exactly at the same time is during the runs. You both run every kilometer, and the way you organize yourselves here will determine the final result.

Before starting, choose who leads. One in front. One behind.

The leader

The leader sets the pace and controls the run. And therefore must:

  • Maintain a steady pace
  • Avoid unnecessary accelerations
  • Adapt to the terrain
  • Always think about the team and not individually
  • Ensure the pace is sustainable from the first kilometer

A good leader in a pair must run even smarter than if they were running solo.

The athlete who follows

The second athlete goes right behind. Close to the back. At arm's length.
Not farther. Not closer.

This distance allows maintaining pace without having to constantly accelerate. If the second athlete needs to lower the pace, they say so. Communication must be present at all times.

Agree before starting short phrases that help you communicate:

  • "slower"
  • "hold"
  • "breathe"
  • "faster"

The communication prevents mistakes helps you reach the next station better and prevents one of the two from burning out before the other. The goal is to arrive together.

Pacing strategy in HYROX doubles

Pace is the factor that breaks the most doubles races.
Not due to lack of fitness, but due to poor race management.

Mistake No.1: starting too fast

The most common error in doubles is shooting off in the first kilometer. The atmosphere will push your motivation to the maximum and you'll want to give everything at the start, when the body is still fresh... that's why at the start you must run intelligently and save energy for later.

If the pair ahead sets a pace that isn't yours, let them go. If you don't, for when you realize it, you've already spent too much energy. That excess is almost always paid for in kilometers 5–6.

That's why agree on a pace before the start and respect it.
Even if it seems conservative at first.

Recommended pace by level

The correct pace depends on your experience. But it must always be sustainable. That's what you've trained for and prepared before the event.

If you are starting in HYROX
Run at a pace where you can talk in short sentences.
If you can't talk… you're going too fast.
This is the simplest and most reliable indicator for beginners.

If you already have experience
Use a controlled pace:
RPE 7–8.
That means:

  • Strong but controlled breathing
  • High perceived exertion
  • Ability to sustain the pace throughout the run

Remember that in total there are more than 8 km of running throughout the event; it's not about going all-out in km 1 and being dead by km 5.

Useful reference: the slower athlete's pace
A practical reference is to use the slower of the two's training pace as a base.
This avoids the classic peak–collapse that defeats many pairs in the second half of the event.
If the pace works for both from the start, the chances of maintaining it and finishing well increase significantly.

Official rules you must know

Besides strategy, there are specific rules that directly affect the result.

You must always run together

You both run together, always.
Both team members must complete each kilometer together.
The timing system continuously monitors the proximity between teammates.

If you separate by more than five seconds: 1 minute penalty per segment.

From the fourth infraction: You are excluded from the official classification.

How to move inside the ROXzone

The ROXzone is the central hub of the course where all stations are located.
While you're in that zone, keep moving at all times.
Do not stop when crossing the IN.
Keep jogging until your lane.
Upon finishing the station:
Jog until you are back onto the track.
And remember every second counts.

IN and OUT: don't confuse them

Enter through the IN.
Exit through the OUT.
Confusing the arches costs: 2 minutes of penalty for each occurrence.
It's a more common mistake than it seems.

You must enter the station together

Both of you must cross the IN together to start the station.
The station cannot start until both of you are present.
And you cannot leave until both of you are ready to do so.
Coordination here prevents you from losing seconds you'll need later.

Fast Lane vs Running Lane

The track is divided into two lanes.
If you run at 4 min/km or faster:
Use the inner lane.
The rest, those who run slower than that 4 min/km:
Outer lane.
Respect it as a pair as well.

Common mistakes in HYROX doubles

Most failures don't come from lack of fitness.
They come from incorrect decisions.

Separating during the kilometer
You go together or it doesn't count.
If one falls behind, the other adjusts the pace and waits. There's nothing to think about or argue here. Separating forces you to accelerate afterwards and each acceleration costs energy.

Not deciding who leads before starting
Improvising during the run costs seconds. And those seconds add up over each of the eight kilometers. Deciding roles before arriving at the event reduces stress, improves pacing and saves time.

Starting at a pace you can't maintain
Enthusiasm and poorly managed start adrenaline can cost you in the second half of the event. If the start is too fast, the finish will be too harsh. Don't start too fast and be patient.

If the stronger athlete pulls too much
One arriving fresh while the other is wrecked is a problem.
Both of you must arrive at the stations in a condition to work, and this is where a pair that has trained together will notice it. We must know our partner, know where they are stronger and weaker, and match the pace to the weaker part at each moment.

Ignoring your partner's signals
If one asks to slow down, you slow down. Trust in the system you've agreed on is what keeps you together when body and mind start to fail.
Listening to your partner is part of the strategy.

Next step: start training as a pair

Make sure to train the run in these 3 ways:

1. Continuous run: builds endurance

Include at least 1 continuous run per week to increase your endurance.

Start according to your level. Beginners should include walking sections during long runs to maintain technique and prevent fatigue from degrading it.

The objective here is to accumulate running time with good technique.

2. Intervals: improve your running speed

Include intervals once or twice a week to improve your speed and get used to race pace.

Train at distances of 500–1000 m at race pace, with 3 minutes of rest, and you can do between 5 and 8 repetitions.

These sessions teach the body to maintain demanding paces without losing control.

3. Running with fatigue: simulate competition

Finish the week training with fatigue, combining running with stations. This is where HYROX is truly trained.

Simulate the real competition and improve your recovery capacity between efforts.

Combine the 8 stations with running:
Run 400 m at race pace, then perform half of a station and immediately return to running.

The key here is to recover your race pace as quickly as possible after each station.

Final

If you already have running under control, the next challenge is to arrive at each station with a clear strategy. Pay attention to the next content to continue preparing your run as a pair.
